Taking a Walk Thru London at Night

Never ever over book yourself, especially if it’s your first day of your trip. Trust me, I know. Because well, I did just that. I had planned quite a lot for my first day, including a visit to the Shard and Shakespeare’s Globe tickets. Though, originally it wasn’t supposed to be that big. At the last-minute I had squeezed in a day in Scotland because I was supposed to meet up with some people.

So everything that had been planned for my last day got added to my first day. After landing, checking in at the YHA Oxford Street, and doing a bit of shopping, I crashed. I took what was supposed to be a short twenty minute nap. Turned into an hour-long siesta that made me late for The Shard.

Visit The Shard

Visit The Shard

I had bought tickets to visit The Shard and see some amazing views of London. However, by the time I woke up, took a tube, and found my way over there I had missed my scheduled time to go in. Ah well, I have to save something to do for next time right?

Did you know London’s highest and best view is situated at the top of The Shard? The Shard viewing platform is located on floors 68, 69 and 72. At almost twice the height of any other viewing platform in the capital, it offers unparalleled 360-degree views for up to 40 miles. I most certainly plan to go to the Shard viewing platform next time I’m in London. Have you gone?

Shakespeare’s Globe Tickets

I also had a Shakespeare’s Globe ticket for that night. Luckily, I had bought a seat and a cushion, rather than standing like I did last time. Standing would have been fine, except for the fact that I didn’t have nearly enough caffeine in me to keep me upright for the whole time. The show was ‘As You Like It’ and it was marvelous! I loved the Globe last time I went when they were performing ‘The Tempest’ and I loved it this time. I would highly recommend it!

London at Night

After the show came the decision to either take a tube ride back to the hostel, or walk. I’d never seen what London at night was like so this was my chance! Sure I’d been out to pubs at night, but I’d never seen the Thames all lit up. It’s something I really, really wanted to do. Let me tell you, it’s gorgeous! I wish I had an apartment there! I braved the cold in my thin jacket and walked the Thames all the way back.

Nice thing about the Thames is there really are people there all the time. It was near midnight at this point and I was worried it would turn into a horror film where the blonde girl walks alone in the dark. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. I just made sure to always walk with other people and no one bothered me. Some of my photos are blurry cause I couldn’t hold still because of the cold, but you can take my word for it that it was beautiful!

I hope this was helpful in planning what to do in London! Lesson learned, be mindful of time!

Going to the Globe is something I didn’t have a chance to do while I was in London last time. But I’m going next summer and it’s on my list!

Definitely do it! I’ve done it twice now and enjoyed it both times!
