17 of the Best Netflix Travel Movies to Watch for Trip Inspiration

We’ve all been there. 45 minutes into scrolling on Netflix with nothing to show for it.

You’re likely annoyed by vague descriptions of travel movies on Netflix that don’t tell you if a film will actually showcase gorgeous locations or just fall flat with fake Hollywood sets.

Having spent countless hours watching movies to satisfy my travel cravings since practically birth, and visiting many locations featured in films, such as Versailles, Tuscan and California wineries, and the Cliffs of Moher, I truly understand what fellow wanderlusters want to see.

Whether you’re a hopeless romantic dreaming of cobblestone European streets or a culture enthusiast seeking historical dramas that’ll teach and transport you to breathtaking locations, I’ve curated these 17 movies about traveling on Netflix for their ability to deliver that essential escape factor (as they are actually filmed on location) to inspire your next adventure.

Best Movies Set in Africa

This continent’s entries range from Southern Africa’s safari country to the Indian Ocean’s island shores, with a detour through North Africa’s deserts.

1. Holiday in the Wild (2019)

Jilted by her husband on the eve of embarking on an African safari, a woman travels to the continent solo and meets an elephant conservationist.

Definitely not your typical Christmas movie, as there’s no snow, nonetheless, it’s a cute film worth watching.

2. Lonely Planet (2024)

At an idyllic writers’ retreat in Morocco, a newly single novelist finds an unexpected connection with a younger man who’s reevaluating his life choices.

As an aspiring novelist, I watched this film with intrigue about what a writer’s retreat is like, as I’ve yet to be on one. While the age-gap romance wasn’t my cup of tea, I did enjoy the locale.

3. Resort to Love (2021)

Erica, who ends up as the entertainment at her ex-fiancé’s wedding after reluctantly taking a gig at a luxurious island resort while in the wake of a music career meltdown.

I’ve yet to visit Mauritius, but this Netflix film makes me want to book a ticket!

Best Movies Set in Asia

Two very different corners of Asia show up here.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love was filmed entirely in Vietnam, with its terraced rice fields and bustling street life on full display. Lion takes you to Kolkata and Madhya Pradesh in India before crossing continents entirely to Tasmania and Melbourne, Australia, in its second half.

4. A Tourist’s Guide to Love (2024)

After an unexpected breakup, a travel executive accepts an assignment to go undercover and learn about the Vietnamese tourist industry.

Along the way, she finds adventure and romance with her Vietnamese expat tour guide.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love is one of my favorite movies about travel on Netflix.

Even though it was cliché in parts, it was a wholesome traveler movie we don’t get to see very often.

5. Lion (2016)

Years after being separated from his mom and adopted by an Australian couple, an Indian man returns to his hometown determined to find his birth family.

If you’re looking for an inspirational travel film, this is it. Based on a true story, Dev Patel effortlessly makes you feel for Saroo.

Best European Travel Movies

Europe dominates this list, and for good reason.

Italy shows up across three films—La Dolce Villa lingers in Tuscany, while Love in the Villa adds Verona and Lake Garda, and Murder Mystery brings in more of the country.

Ireland’s County Wicklow, County Mayo, and the Cliffs of Moher anchor Irish Wish, while England and Malta carry the Enola Holmes films, Scotland hosts Outlaw King, and Murder Mystery 2 rounds things out with Paris.

6. Irish Wish (2024)

When the love of her life gets engaged to her friend, Maddie puts her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland.

Days before the wedding, Maddie makes a spontaneous wish for true love, only to wake up as the bride-to-be.

Including the Cliffs of Moher, which Lindsay Lohan luckily didn’t get electrocuted at, like me, to my knowledge.

Even still, it makes for a great day trip from Dublin!

7-8. Murder Mystery 1 (2019) & 2 (2023)

Murder Mystery is about a New York cop and his wife going on a European vacation to reinvigorate the spark in their marriage. A chance encounter leads to them being framed for the murder of an elderly billionaire.

Murder Mystery 2 is about the now private detectives launching their own agency; Nick and Audrey Spitz land at the center of an international investigation when a friend is abducted.

You’ll find a few of the Parisian sites featured, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, in my 3-day Paris itinerary.

9-11. Enola Holmes 1 (2020), 2 (2022), & 3 (2026)

When Enola Holmes, Sherlock’s sister, discovers her mother is missing, she endeavors to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy.

In the sequel, she’s now a detective-for-hire who takes on her first official case to find a missing girl as the sparks of a dangerous conspiracy ignite a mystery that requires the help of friends – and Sherlock himself – to unravel.

12. La Dolce Villa (2025)

When his daughter decides to buy a crumbling Tuscan villa, Eric rushes to Italy to talk her out of it — and instead finds beauty, romance and new purpose.

This looked a bit corny if I’m completely honest, however, I found the father-daughter angle fun to explore as it wasn’t the typical cookie-cutter rom-com.

13. Love in the Villa (2022)

A young woman takes a trip to romantic Verona, Italy, after a breakup, only to find that the villa she reserved was double-booked, and she’ll have to share her vacation with a cynical British man.

Starring Vampire Diaries and Umbrella Academy alum, I was sold the minute I saw them!

Fans of the former may be interested in seeing Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans, as its sister show, The Originals, is set there.

14. Outlaw King (2018)

Following Robert the Bruce, the 14th-century Scottish King who waged war against the indomitable English army over a 3-year period, this film focuses on Bruce’s decision to rebel against the rule of Edward I over Scotland, thus becoming an “outlaw,” through the 1307 Battle of Loudoun Hill.

If you visit Stirling Castle, you can also check out his nearby statue.

Wine Country keeps things close to my Southern California home, filming entirely in Napa Valley.

15. Wine Country (2019)

During a vacation to Napa Valley, a group of long time friends reunite and revisit past choices in this hilarious and heartfelt comedy from director Amy Poehler.

If you’re looking for a girls’ trip film, you can’t go wrong with this pick. It’s hilarious and will make you want to book your own winery tour.

Another girls’ trip film I love is The Spy Who Dumped Me.

If you’re heading up that way, I highly recommend visiting Hearst Castle as well.

Best Movies Set in Oceania

New Zealand carries this section solo with Falling Inn Love, notable as the first Netflix original ever filmed entirely on location there—rolling green hills and small-town charm included.

16. Falling Inn Love (2019)

When city girl Gabriela spontaneously enters a contest and wins a rustic New Zealand inn, she teams up with bighearted contractor Jake Taylor to fix and flip it.

I mean, where do I enter? I’ll snatch up a home abroad!

Best Movies Set in South America

Paddington in Peru is the section’s only entry, filming at one of the seven wonders of the world—Machu Picchu.

17. Paddington in Peru (2024)

When Paddington discovers his beloved aunt has gone missing from the Home for Retired Bears, he and the Brown family head to the jungles of Peru to find her.

Determined to solve the mystery, they soon stumble across a legendary treasure as they make their way through the rainforests of the Amazon.

The earlier films are quite an adventure as well!

I love this adorable bear so much, I’m planning on heading back to London to see his musical!

Honorable Mentions (That Used to Be on Netflix)

Madagascar (2005)

Four animal friends get a taste of the wild life when they break out of captivity at the Central Park Zoo and wash ashore on the island of Madagascar.

Since it’s an animated film, it’s not shot on location, but a fun addition to these travel movies, especially for kids!

It also has many sequels, which are also travel movies.

Letters to Juliet (2010)

On vacation in Verona, aspiring author Sophie finds a decades-old love letter and begins a quest to help the writer find her long-lost true love.

I’m not a big rom-com fan, and even I found this adorable movie worth a watch, as it really embraces the cinematic side of Italy that I was able to see on a wine tour of Tuscany.
