Comics Guesthouse Roma is worth staying at for budget travelers, solo travelers, and anyone who wants a themed, social hostel experience rather than a hotel. Located in the residential Lepanto neighborhood, it’s centrally located near most major Rome attractions (though the Colosseum and Roman Forum require transit). Based on my stay in the Super Mario Bros room, the multi-layered security, air conditioning, and staff responsiveness made it a standout hostel.

What Attractions Are Near Comics Guesthouse Roma?
I chose Comics Guesthouse Roma during my June 2015 trip because it was not only affordable but also centrally located, near several main attractions and a metro stop (Lepanto).
It was easy to get to the hostel from the airport using Rome’s public transportation.
As you can see on the Google Map below (I made Comics Guesthouse the Orange pin), most sites are walkable, except the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, which are a bit of a walk.
When traveling, the last thing you want to be is really far from the sights you plan to see.
It eats up valuable time that you could be spending enjoying your vacation.

- A large, scenic public park ideal for a stroll or picnic
- Castel Sant’Angelo – .9 mile
- Originally built as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, today it’s a museum
- Piazza Navona – 1.1 mi
- Beautiful Baroque square with fountains, restaurants, and street life
- Spanish Steps – 1.1 mi
- Classic steep stairway and landmark of the city
- The Vatican – 1.1 mi
- Where you’ll find the Basilica and can climb St. Peter’s dome, and visit the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel
- Pantheon – 1.2 mi
- One of Rome’s best-preserved ancient buildings with an incredible dome and a long history
- Trevi Fountain – 1.4 mi
- Famous Baroque fountain where many toss a coin
- Roman Forum – 1.9 mi
- Ruins of temples, basilicas, and public spaces that were the heart of ancient Rome
- Colosseum – 2.2 mi
- Rome’s iconic ancient amphitheater and symbol of the city

Is Comics Guesthouse Roma Safe?
Comics Guesthouse is extremely safe.
They have a big gated entrance that leads to a staircase.
After going up one floor, you have a key code to enter the hostel, then a key to access your room.
They provide the keys on an adorable, nerdy keychain. I had a Luigi one that matched the Super Mario Bros room I was staying in.
In the rooms, you’ll also find lockers where you can store your valuables.
When I let them know that the locker I was assigned wasn’t locking, the staff had it fixed the same day!
Beyond the hostel’s own security, Rome is a generally safe city for tourists.
Italy’s 2025 Global Peace Index ranking is #33, consistently placing it among the safer Southern European destinations.
The Lepanto neighborhood, where Comics Guesthouse is located, is residential and calm compared to the more chaotic tourist zones.
The main concern in central Rome isn’t personal safety, it’s petty theft.

I had the pleasure of staying in the Super Mario Bros shared room while on my solo trip to Rome.
It looks like the room designs may have shifted since I last visited, so check their site for the latest offerings, but it appears these are the current options:

I love staying in shared rooms because you always meet interesting people from around the world, one of whom I’ve become Facebook friends with.
Checking into this Hostel in Rome, Italy
When you enter Comics Guesthouse Roma, you’re first in the main room, which is wall-to-wall with comics.
They have video game consoles (Wii and PlayStation), arcade games, DVDs, books, and magazines for those staying at the hostel.
You can hang out on bean bags or a comfy couch.
They also have a wall with discounts—perfect for budget travelers—travel tips, and more!
I highly recommend checking these out over getting the tourist card, Omnia.
Upon check-in, I was given not only my keys but a map of the city, which I wound up using quite a bit! If you’d like a paperless map, download the offline Maps.me for navigation (one of my top apps for Europe)!
The staff was lovely and super helpful.
Though they don’t offer 24-hour service, they list desk hours and emergency contact numbers.
Fortunately, I didn’t have to use it, but it was reassuring to know it was there, as I’ve had trouble with other hostels failing to provide this essential information (see my post Are hostels safe?).

The Super Mario Bros Shared Room
My room was decked out in every possible Super Mario Bros. way!
Everything from the light fixtures to the toilet had something Mario-associated on it.
I was in a room with six bunk beds, and while that may sound like a lot, everyone got on swimmingly and respected each other’s space.
As it was June when I was visiting Italy, it was HOT (Average daytime highs reach about 77°F to 85°F (25°C to 29°C)! However, they have air conditioning, which helped a ton!
The room itself was spotless! I loved that there was a little desk I used to do my makeup and sort out my bag for the day.
One of the best parts of this room is the little balcony!
I Skyped my friend from here and had a lovely time chilling there and chatting.
There were two showers in the bathroom.
I’m not sure why, but who am I to complain about options?
The facilities were immaculate and tidy. There was a little stand next to the shower, which was convenient for hair products, toiletries, and such.
Comics Guesthouse Amenities
The amenities I used included Wi-Fi, luggage storage, maps, linens, and towels.
That last one means you don’t have to add a towel to your hostel packing list (which I never recommend).
Since I was trying to eat as much authentic Italian food as possible before heading home to the States, I didn’t use the kitchen much, but it was nice to have the option.
Had I been in Rome for more than just three days, I would have likely taken advantage of more of their amenities.
Who Is Comics Guesthouse Roma Best For (And Not)
Comics Guesthouse Roma is best for solo travelers, budget travelers, and anyone who wants a fun, themed hostel experience over a generic budget hotel.
The nerdy room themes (Super Mario Bros, Batman, One Piece, and more), social common areas, and central Lepanto location near a metro stop make it a strong pick if you enjoy meeting other travelers and want easy access to most of Rome’s major sights.
It’s less ideal if you want to be within walking distance of the Colosseum or Roman Forum, since both require a bit of transit from this location.
It’s also not the right fit if you’re looking for a quiet, adult-only atmosphere, since the space leans toward a younger, social vibe, or if 24-hour front desk service is a dealbreaker, since the hostel only offers listed desk hours plus an emergency contact.
Is Comics Guesthouse Roma Worth Staying At?
Overall, I highly recommend Comics Guesthouse if you are looking for a hostel in Rome. I’d give it 4.2/5 stars ⭐ for its location, safety, and theme.
While it is not exclusively a youth hostel, it is geared towards a younger vibe.
It’s near several main attractions, safe, affordable, and brings out your inner nerd!
