Having owned my Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside for over a decade—traveling across Europe, North America, and Asia through cobblestone streets, airport baggage handling, and hostel storage—I can provide honest, long-term insights into how this luggage actually performs.

I initially gifted my Delsey Paris luggage around 2013/2014 by my mom, primarily for its TSA-approved locks because I was staying in hostels and worried about security, not because I was particularly impressed by the brand or expected it to become my most trusted travel companion.

But after dragging this suitcase through countless adventures from Italian cobblestones to Thai airports, watching it survive airline baggage handlers who seem to view luggage as projectiles, and dealing with only minor wheel repairs (covered by warranty), I’ve become genuinely attached to this battle-tested travel partner.

I’ve used this Delsey Paris Helium Aero suitcase for more than 10 years across 25+ countries, including Europe, Asia, and North America.

This review is based entirely on my personal experience rather than short-term testing.

Who is Delsey Paris?

Established in 1946 in Paris by brothers Vincent and Adolf Delhaye, the company originally focused on producing leather camera cases, capitalizing on the photography boom that followed World War II.

The brand name “Delsey” cleverly merges the founders’ last name (Delhaye) with “Elysée,” which references the iconic Parisian avenue, infusing the brand with a distinctly French flair.

In the early 1970s, the company shifted from producing camera cases to luggage. This move came at a time when international travel had become more accessible to the middle class, creating a growing market for reliable, stylish travel accessories.

Since then, Delsey has established itself as a premium mid-range luggage manufacturer consistently recognized for innovative features like lightweight designs, integrated security systems, and stylish color options.

They’ve also recently focused on developing eco-friendly luggage options, integrating innovative technology, all while maintaining their stylish, functional design reputation.

My Delsey Helium Aero Review

I got my Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside over 10 years ago. I’ve since used it to travel across Europe, North America, and even all the way to Thailand!

You’ll notice it’s not as shiny as it used to be in my photos. That’s because it’s been on that many adventures and remains my go-to when traveling, especially abroad.

I could clean it up a bit, and remove some of the sticker glue and such, but I wanted to show you it as authentically as possible after this decade.

Why Delsey Luggage is the Best for International Travel

1. Exceptional Durability

One of the key features I love about my Delsey hard side is the polycarbonate shell.

In 1974, they introduced the first hard-shell suitcase made from polypropylene, a revolutionary material that was lighter and more durable than traditional luggage materials.

While I’ve heard of other brands with hard cases cracking, I have not had that experience with mine. I’ve never even seen a sign of a split in the case.

This incredibly hard shell gives it plenty of airline handling resilience, as we all know far too well that suitcases are often chucked around a bit at airports.

It also has reinforced corners on the hardside models to protect against impact damage should it land awkwardly when tossed onto the plane.

2. Light Weight

You’d think that having an incredibly durable shell would add quite a bit of weight to a piece of luggage, but with the Delsey, that’s not the case.

I find that it’s very light when empty. Of course, that depends on what’s on your travel packing list, but know that the bag doesn’t add much to the total, especially if you’re worried about weight limits for international travel.

The 29-inch version I have weighs 12.5 Pounds.

The Samsonite Freeform 28-inch, which it is often compared to, is 9.59 Pounds. So the Delsey is slightly heavier, but in my experience, more durable and affordable.

3. Security Features and TSA-Approved Locks

One of the reasons I originally got the Delsey Paris luggage was because of its TSA-approved combination locks.

I was primarily staying in hostels back then and wanted to make sure my luggage wasn’t temperable by others when I’d be exploring during the day.

Nowadays, many hostels provide lockers for those worried about their valuables, but I still love the peace of mind that I can lock up my suitcase and not worry about it.

Their zippers are also designed to resist forced entry attempts, so no one can easily stick a pen in between the teeth of the zipper and force it open, either.

4. Spinner Wheels and Maneuverability

Like many places in Europe, there are cobblestone roads, which can make it hard to maneuver a suitcase.

However, because of Delsey’s double spinner wheels, their suitcases glide effortlessly in any direction, even over uneven cobblestones.

They are also rather quiet. I’ve never heard them squeaking along while I’ve been traveling.

Making this a great gift idea for someone traveling to Europe.

Their stable wheelbases also help to prevent tipping when fully packed. So you don’t have to worry about being one of those people we’ve all seen countless times place something on top of their suitcase just to see it tip over.

In addition to the fabulous wheel design, I really enjoy the ergonomic handles that make it comfortable to hold for an extended time.

As a taller person, the telescoping handle with multiple height settings also is a nice bonus!

5. Interior Organization

Inside, the suitcase is divided into two compartments.

Typically, I put my clothes in the compartment without the zipper and then put things like toiletries, socks, and shoes in the zippered compartment.

This is mostly in case anything leaks. If so, it’s within the zippered section and hopefully won’t get all over everything.

The zippered section also has a pocket. I usually place anything flat in there, like additional face coverings or paperwork.

However, one of the most important items I put in there is an AirTag. This is to help locate my bag should it go missing. I had to use it when I returned from Mexico, and the airline told us the wrong baggage claim, so a bunch of passengers and I were all standing at the wrong claim until we figured it must be wrong, and I was able to follow the AirTag tracking on my phone to my bag.

I also swear by packing cubes (especially compression ones), which are one of my travel essentials, as they help to organize my clothing options.

In the non-zippered section, there are also tie-down straps that prevent shifting during transit. I have had some stuff shift, but I think that may have been TSA checking my bag more than stuff moving on its own.

6. Water Resistance

Something I didn’t really even consider a major bonus until recently was the Delsey hardside’s water resistance.

I tried out a travel backpack on my trip to Ambergris Caye and, while on a tour, took my luggage as it would drop me off at my hotel after. This… was a big mistake as not only did the speed boat kick up a lot of water, but it began to rain.

Luckily, my laptop wasn’t damaged, but it was a worry of mine the entire tour once I realized just how soaked everything was getting.

Had I instead taken my Delsey with me, I wouldn’t have even blinked an eye at this situation. Yes, water may have seeped in a bit where the zippers are, but it wouldn’t have gotten nearly as wet as the backpack wound up getting.

The one bonus of the backpack, however, is that it has a padded laptop compartment, so that’s why I brought that instead of my Delsey on that trip, as I was remote working.

Even if you don’t get the hardside, Delsey has water-resistant fabrics on their softside luggage that keep belongings dry in unexpected weather as well.

7. Expandability Features and Capacity

We’ve all struggled to pack light for a trip, which is where instead of sitting on your suitcase in an attempt to smoosh everything in, you can unzip the expandable section that provides up to 25% more packing space when needed.

I have certainly needed the extra 2 inches it provides on past trips of mine, so it was wonderful to know it was there and that I wasn’t in epic trouble.

To give you an idea of how much I’ve fit in the 29-inch version, I packed all that I needed for a 2 week trip to Italy that then went straight into 2 weeks in Thailand.

These were very different climates, but I was able to fit it all in and only took my anti-theft travel purse on the plane. However, I did a load of laundry once I got to Thailand, primarily for intimates like bras and underwear. Aside from that, I didn’t do laundry constantly by any means.

8. Style and Design

I’m more of a function over style traveler, but for those who are aesthetically minded, Delsey Paris does offer tons of color and design options.

I’ve got the teal showcased above, but mine is a dark silver color. You’ve also likely noticed they changed the logo a bit since I got mine, so don’t let that throw you off.

9. Impressive Warranty Coverage

One of the best reasons I can give you on this Delsey Paris luggage review to get one of these pieces of luggage is their awesome warranty.

While I love my luggage, the wheel has broken twice. More correctly, the rubber on the wheel came off. Both times, it was in good enough shape to still move around, just less fluidly.

Upon arriving home, I took it to a repair shop and had it fixed for free the first time, as it was still under warranty.

Unfortunately, the second time, it was past the warranty, but mind you, this was 10 years after purchasing this suitcase, so it being out of warranty at that point is rather understandable.

On the first occasion, I found their customer service to be responsive and helpful. I was directed to a repair shop near me and had it back in about a week or two.

Their warranty terms are clearly laid out, so it’s easy to tell what is and isn’t covered and for how long.

10. Affordability and Value

The Delsey Paris Helium Aero I’ve linked which is the same one I’ve got, except in dark silver, is listed at just over $100 dollars.

I often see sales for it on Amazon, so if you’re interested, check to see if a sale is upcoming before purchasing. These frequent sales and promotions make Delsey’s luggage more accessible.

At this price point, I find it to be exceptional value for the quality compared to other premium brands, which often cost almost $200 or more.

Even if the price point seems a bit out of your budget, the durability and longevity of the Delsey products make it super worth it. Remember, I haven’t had to buy a piece of luggage in over 10 years and don’t expect to anytime soon.

Cons of a Delsey Paris Suitcase

This Delsey Paris luggage review wouldn’t be very fair without listing some of the cons of this suitcase.

As I mentioned, the wheel has broken twice. However, one time was under warranty, and the second wasn’t a terrible repair cost. I was also able to use it despite the rubber covering coming off the wheel, which made it easier to maneuver.

Please note that for warranty repair, the luggage must be evaluated by their Authorized Repair Center. You are responsible for all costs of getting the product to an Authorized Repair Center, which may include the cost of packaging, shipping, and applicable taxes. The Authorized Repair Center will determine whether or not the damage is covered under DELSEY’s warranty.

In my case, I lived in Los Angeles at the time, and an authorized repair shop wasn’t too far away from me, so I just drove it over. However, if you live in a more remote area, this maybe more troublesome for you.

The 29-inch is not a carry-on, so if you are looking for something you can take on the plane, do check out one of their smaller carry-on sized options.

Or if you just typically pack more or less, you may want to look into another size option.

In comparison to some other mid-range luggage on the market, it is about 2-3lbs heavier if you are worried about weight limits.

Who Should Buy Delsey Paris Luggage?

Perfect for:

• Budget-conscious travelers — At roughly $100, it delivers durability and features comparable to premium brands costing $200 or more, without the markup.
• International travelers — Battle-tested across Europe, North America, and Asia, including cobblestone streets and the Thai jungle, with no cracks or splits in the shell after a decade.
