Planning your first trip to Paris?

Searching for a comprehensive Paris packing list that goes beyond the generic travel essentials, one that specifically addresses the unique needs of female travelers, such as safety concerns and comfort when exploring the City of Light?

Whether you’re wondering what shoes can handle cobblestone streets for 15,000+ steps daily, how to stay safe from pickpockets in tourist areas, or which versatile pieces will keep you stylish without breaking airline weight limits, you need advice tailored to the female travel experience.

Add in concerns about unpredictable weather that can ruin an outfit (and your day), and finding the right balance between looking put-together and staying comfortable, and packing becomes genuinely overwhelming.

As someone who’s navigated Paris’ streets, I’ve learned these lessons through plenty of blisters, tested anti-theft bags in pickpocket hotspots, and discovered which products are worth the luggage space and which you can skip.

What Clothing to Pack for Paris

Comfortable Walking Shoes

A photo my Aunt took of me as we were exploring Paris

Bring at least two pairs of comfy, broken-in shoes.

You’ll be doing a lot of walking on cobblestones and uneven terrain in Paris, especially if you plan to go on day trips to places like the Palace of Versailles, so new shoes can be a bad idea; they might give you blisters.

Instead, go for supportive sneakers or low-heeled boots that can handle the massive daily step count you’ll be racking up.

I know some what to wear in Paris guides say to bring ballet flats, but to me, they don’t offer much support, so I’d steer clear of them.

Insoles

Along with comfortable walking shoes, I also suggest insoles to help support your feet.

They can help to lessen the impact those cobblestone streets have on your feet as they’re extra cushion.

Just make sure you get ones you feel the most comfortable in. I’ve had ones with and without arch support, and it really depends on the wearer which ones you should get.

Layering Pieces

Parisian weather can be unpredictable. It’ll be sunny one moment and rainy the next.

Pack a lightweight cardigan, scarf, or a versatile jacket that works for both day and evening.

Whatever fits your travel style that you can layer and keep warm when it gets chilly!

Choose neutral colors like black, navy, or beige that mix and match easily. This will save luggage space and money since you’ll need fewer items.

Other Essential Items

Obviously this is not the entire clothing paris packing list, you’ll also need tops, pants, pajamas, underwear, socks, bras, etc.

You may also want to bring a belt, dressy clothes for going out at night, a hat, and dresses.

I have another post with a more comprehensive packing list for Europe, if you’re looking for a checklist.

Security Essentials for Female Travelers

Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag

Paris is known for pickpockets, especially in tourist spots and on public transportation.

Get a crossbody bag with built-in RFID protection and locking zippers—it’s my top tip for this Paris packing list!

I adore my anti-theft purse, the Travelon Messenger Bag, and have been using it since 2021.

If you’re looking for a more stylish and sustainable option, check out the Thafael bag, which is made of vegan leather.

Regardless of the anti-theft purse you pick, I highly recommend opting for a crossbody. They’re the top choice for travel purses because they’re safer. It’s because they are tougher to snatch when slung across your chest.

My one of my top Paris safety tips is to remember to keep your bag in front of you and zipped up at all times.

Money Belt or Hidden Pouch

If an anti-theft purse isn’t to your liking, wear a money belt under your clothing or use a hidden pouch that sits inside your bra.

Store cash, copies of important documents, and emergency contact information there.

Apple AirTag 4 Pack. Keep Track of and find Your Keys, Wallet, Luggage, Backpack, and More. Simple one-tap Set up with iPhone or iPad

Air Tags

For those who may not know what an AirTag is, you can connect it to your Apple device, and it works similarly to Find My Phone in that you can track the tag’s location.

I have one for my purse, suitcase, backpack, and laptop case.

Luckily, I’ve only had to use it actively once, when I was coming back from Mexico City. They told us we were on one baggage claim, but we were actually on another.

It’s a good investment nonetheless, as I’ve had friends with lost luggage, and it helped them track it down. Making it an excellent gift for someone visiting Europe.

Technology and Communication

Portable Phone Charger

TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter, International Power Adapter with 4 USB Ports (1 USB C), Worldwide Plug Adaptor Wall Charger for USA to Europe UK France Germany Spain Ireland Australia(Type C/G/A/I)
INIU Portable Charger, Ultra Slim 10000mAh 45W PD Power Bank, USB C in&Out Fast Charging Battery Pack, Travel Essential Phone Powerbank Compatible with iPhone 17 16 15 Samsung S22 S21 Google iPad etc

Paris requires lots of navigation and photo-taking.

A portable charger ensures you stay connected for safety and convenience.

Choose one that has enough capacity for full-day outings, and if you’re traveling with friends, get one that charges multiple devices.

My go-to one is super old and no longer available, but I’m sharing a highly rated alternative here so you can capture all those photos from your trip!

You’ll also need reliable battery juice if you’re getting a Paris tourist pass, such as the Paris Museum Pass, which is now available digitally. Or any of the many free and helpful Paris apps!

And don’t forget the cable, as most won’t come with one!

International Travel Adapter

An international travel adapter is a must-have if you don’t use Type C and Type E plugs like France does.

Before you leave, make sure your items fit into the adapter correctly.

I once took a hair dryer with a large plug that didn’t fit properly into the adapter, so I couldn’t use it on my trip.

Also, make sure it has enough charging ports to meet your needs.

My adapter isn’t available anymore since it’s so old, but the one I’ve listed looks pretty similar.

When I was in Paris, the adapter got a bit warm, so I wouldn’t leave anything plugged in overnight or for longer than needed. It might have been that the hostel was old, but I figured I’d give you a heads-up anyway.

Headphones

Many museums now offer the ability to download their audioguides, so ensure you take a pair of headphones or AirPods with you so that you’re not listening to it aloud.

Health and Hygiene Must-Haves

Basic First Aid Kit

BAND-AID Brand Travel Ready Portable Emergency First Aid Kit for Minor Wound Care, Perfect for Home, Car, Travel, Camping Essentials & Outdoor Emergency Kit, 80 Pieces

Pack a first aid kit as you never know when you’ll need it.

I usually wind up with at least one blister on my travels, even if I have broken in my shoes, so it is useful for that if nothing else.

Anything else you regularly use should be packed as well. In my case, it’s cream for my eczema.

French pharmacies are excellent but may not have familiar brands so anything you rely on, make sure to add to your Paris packing list.

You may want to include anti-diarrheal medication, as rich French cuisine can upset sensitive stomachs.

Pain Relievers

Advil or Ibuprofen is a good idea.

I’m not your doctor, so I’m not prescribing anything. I just want to remind you that headaches and muscle aches can happen, so bring what you and your doctor think is best.

Feminine Hygiene Products

Bring your preferred brands from home.

While they may be available in Paris, they could also be more expensive and may differ from what you’re used to.

Pack enough for your entire trip plus a few extra days.

Hand Sanitizer and Tissues

Essential for public transportation and busy tourist sites.

Choose travel-sized versions that fit easily in your bag so you have them on the go!

Toiletries and Cosmetics

Cosmetics Bag with Flawless written on it

If you’re not a fan of cosmetics, you’re more than welcome to limit this section of the Paris packing list to just toiletries.

However, please remember that if you’re staying in a hostel, they may not provide all the “usual” toiletries that hotels do, so ensure you’re taking what you’ll need with you.

Shampoo and Conditioner

If you’re trying to do this trip with carry-on only, you’ll want to check out liquid-less alternatives.

I like Ethique Shampoo and Conditioner bars and typically get a tin to put them in for travel. I got my tins from Lush, but there are also tons of options online.

Ethique is an ethical haircare brand that uses clean ingredients, is vegan and cruelty-free, and opts for compostable packaging.

I also really love their body butter, as it helped alleviate some of the itchiness I had due to eczema.

They also have face scrubs, body wash, deodorant, and more.

The only product of theirs I haven’t loved is the deodorant, but that’s simply because when the block wears down, it becomes difficult to apply. Otherwise, I’ve been happy with their line.

And if you’re worried about how long they’ll last, I’ve had mine for quite a while now and still haven’t had to replace them, so if you’re only vacationing for a bit, say four days in Paris, you’ll be perfectly fine!

Travel Toothbrush

I usually use an Oral-B electric toothbrush while at home, but when traveling abroad, I want to minimize the amount of stuff I have to charge.

It’s just easier, so I’m not plugging in 8 gadgets, so I bring a battery-powered electric toothbrush instead.

Mini-Manicure Set

Nail Clippers and Beauty Tool Portable Set Manicure Set 12 in 1, with Pink Leather Bag, Suitable for Home, Workplace, Outdoor Travel, Gift Giving, Salon

My 007 Manicure set has lasted me ten years and is still going strong. I picked it up at a dollar store, so I couldn’t find a link, but this one will work just as well.

I suggest investing in a mini-manicure set, as most will provide you with not just nail clippers but also tweezers, mini-scissors, a nail file, and sometimes other items you may need.

Remember to pack it in your luggage, not your carry-on, since the TSA doesn’t allow scissors in carry-on luggage. But if you’re a carry-on lady, just remove the scissors, and it should be okay.

Nail Polish

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of touching up your nails while in Paris, you can put on a coat of clear nail polish to make them look healthier and cleaner whenever needed.

Plus, you can use this clear nail polish if your stockings get a run!

Just ensure it’s packed well in case the bottle breaks.

Makeup Remover Pads

Paula's Choice Reusable Makeup Remover Pads, Eco-Friendly Cotton & Bamboo Rounds for Toner & Exfoliants, Includes Washable Bag for Laundry & Storage, 10 Count

If you don’t already use makeup remover pads at home, it’s time to invest in some!

These make it SO easy to remove my makeup at the end of the day as they’re made of soft, durable cotton.

They’re also machine washable when hand washing doesn’t get all that mascara off the cloth.

Hair Straightener/Curling Iron

Conair Double Ceramic 1-1/2 Inch Curling Iron, 1.5-Inch Barrel Creates Soft Waves and Curls, Hair Curler for Use on Medium and Long Hair, White
Elchim Natures Touch Flat Iron

I use my flat iron nearly anytime I go out, even at home, so it’s an obvious Paris packing list essential for me. However, it may not be for you.

But if it is, and you’re wondering what my favorite one is, it’s the Elchim Natures Touch Flat Iron, which my hairstylist recommended to me.

It comes with a warranty, but just make sure to register your purchase with the company so it kicks in. Don’t be like me and forget!

I’ve used my curling iron only a handful of times while on vacation, so I’ve stopped bringing it, but if you’re looking for a recommendation, I love my Conair Double Ceramic 1 1/2-Inch Curling Iron.

It gives me bigger waves, which I do at home, I just don’t like to spend the time bothering on vacation.

Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick

Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick | Prevents Skin Chafe & Irritation | Thighs, arms, bra-lines & more | 2.12oz - Unscented Summer Vacation Essentials

Those, like myself, who sometimes have issues with their thighs rubbing together, should invest in a Megababe Thigh Rescue anti-chafe stick.

If I’m in pants, it’s okay, but shorts, skirts, or dresses sometimes cause me issues.

It’s super uncomfortable, so if you’ve experienced this as well, this stick helps prevent skin chafing and irritation.

Weather-Appropriate Additions

Compact Umbrella

Paris’ weather changes quickly.

A small, lightweight umbrella fits in any bag and saves you from expensive purchases during sudden downpours.

Choose one with a good grip for windy conditions.

Waterproof Coat/Trench Coat

creatmo us womens double breasted trench coat

Just before my trip to Paris, I was in London and bought a cheap trenchcoat from Primark that you can see me wearing above.

I fell in love with it; however, as it was inexpensive, it didn’t look that great, so I’ve since invested in a London Fog trench that I really enjoy and bring on trips now.

Although this one isn’t identical to mine, it’s pretty close. If you click the link, you’ll also have the option of khaki, which is what color I have mine in.

I love the big pockets it has as I can quickly stick my phone in them when climbing spiral staircases or when it starts to rain.

London Fog offers a few different designs, so if this one isn’t to your liking, they may have one more to your style.

The only thing I dislike about my coat is that there’s no hood, but I just make sure to bring an umbrella or a hat then.

Either way, bring something waterproof as it does rain regularly in Paris!

Waterproof Your Shoes

KIWI Boot Waterproofer Tough Silicone Waterproof Spray for Boots, Aerosol, 10.5 oz, 1 ct

Speaking of rain… remember to waterproof your shoes!

This spray isn’t going to make them impenetrable, but it’ll definitely help!

Rain Boots

If you’re worried your waterproofed shoes may not be enough, or if there’s a lot of rain forecasted for Paris, you may want to invest in some rain boots!

I would just highly recommend they aren’t high-heeled, or at least super high-heeled, as lower heels will give you more stability.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Even cloudy days can cause sunburn when you’re walking for hours.

Pack quality sunglasses that protect your eyes and a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

These items can be significantly more expensive in Paris.

Smart Packing Organization

Compression Packing Cubes

Organized luggage with Well Traveled Packing Cubes and travel essentials for efficient packing.

Organize your luggage with packing cubes, especially compression ones, to maximize space and keep items sorted so you can get ready quickly for the day!

I put all my pants in one, the shirts in another, and socks in a third; you get the idea.

Dirty Clothes Bag

Pack a separate bag for dirty laundry to keep clean clothes fresh.

A simple plastic bag works, but a dedicated laundry bag is more durable and reusable for future trips.

I use an old Shein bag since it has a zipper and I can easily close it.

Travel-Sized Containers

Conair Travel Sized Toiletries, TSA Approved Travel Bottles, Travel Sized Bottles by Travel Smart, 13 Piece Set

If you’re bringing your regular shampoo and conditioner, or any liquid products for that matter, transfer them to a travel-sized container.

It will occupy much less space than your typical full-sized product.

I have some products that come in glass containers. Even if they are small, I typically transfer them to lessen the weight of my luggage.

Important Documents to Bring

Make copies of your passport, travel insurance, and important cards.

Store these separately from originals and keep digital copies in cloud storage.

This saves time and stress if documents are lost or stolen.

Paris Packing List Tips

Pack Light to Avoid Fees

Funny Face Movie

Airline baggage fees add up quickly!

Bring only the essentials from your Paris packing list, especially if you’re only in Paris for a few days, but plan to do laundry if you stay longer.

I have a helpful guide if you’re trying to figure out how long to stay in Paris.

Many budget airlines have strict weight and size limits, so prioritize versatile pieces over quantity if you’re looking to save on fees.

My favorite new carry-on item is a compression backpack that’s helped me save on some baggage fees since it’s my ‘personal item.’

Reusable Bag

Planning on food shopping or even clothing shopping?

Bring a reusable bag with you that folds up, as many places in Europe now charge for bags.

loqi london reusable shopping bag

I tend to favor getting a bigger bag than a smaller one, so I can fit in as much as I need.

Leave Room for Souvenirs and Shopping

If you plan on picking up some souvenirs or going shopping, make sure to leave space for purchases.

Paris offers incredible shopping opportunities, and you’ll want room for French fashion finds, gourmet foods, and unique gifts to take home to family and friends.

If you’re looking for something before you depart, check out my list of gifts for those traveling to Europe.
