Secret Beach is a bit ironic in that it’s not so much of a secret. At least not anymore!
A local told me a while back that it used to be a pretty chill local spot, but today, it’s very well-populated with bars and restaurants on its shore.
So, is a trip over to Secret Beach Ambergris Caye worth it?
Located on the west side of Belize’s largest island, it’s a bit of a hassle to get to. But that alone didn’t make me answer “no” to this question.
Having made this exact 45-minute golf cart journey to Secret Beach from our resort, X’tan Ha Resort in December 2024, and spent time comparing it to the crystal-clear waters on the reef side of Ambergris Caye, I can give you an honest assessment of whether this west-side destination lives up to its reputation.

Is Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye worth visiting?
Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye is worth visiting if you’re looking for shallow water, beach bars, and a social atmosphere. However, travelers seeking crystal-clear Caribbean beaches may prefer the reef side of Ambergris Caye.
How to Get to Secret Beach
The best way to get to Secret Beach Ambergris Caye is by renting a golf cart.
Unless you are staying super close, you’re going to need one.
From San Pedro, it’s about an 8-mile drive, and even from X’tan Ha, the resort I stayed at during the latter half of my trip, that is located north of town, it’s still almost 7 miles.
So, either way, it is un-walkable unless you manage to snag a place super close by.
Secret Beach Golf Cart Rental
Renting a golf cart is easy, as rental options exist everywhere. We rented it directly from our resort, but we also saw several options in town.
Many people we met rented them for several days. However, we only wound up renting a golf cart for 4 hours. I’ll get into more later why.
But know that we paid $50 USD for a 4-seater. There are usually better deals if you’re doing a whole day.

We didn’t hit any traffic coming from the resort, but as you’ll be leaving central San Pedro and need to cross a bridge, I allotted a bit more time.
Directions to Secret Beach
Getting to Belize’s Secret Beach can be a bit difficult. We actually met a family who got lost on the way there, so what I recommend is getting a map, such as maps.me, to help navigate.
Maps.me is a free app that allows you to download maps onto your phone, meaning that even if you don’t have wifi or data, you still have a map and navigational help. It’s how I got us over to Secret Beach without any issues.
Note that the estimated arrival times are based on a car’s speed on Maps.me, so it’ll be longer than the time shown.
And don’t worry about parking, there is plenty of it!
Tips for Navigating the Road Conditions
We were warned constantly about the road conditions in Ambergris Caye. Honestly, they are not great, but as long as you remain vigilant and stay aware, you’ll be fine.
Keep an eye out for potholes and any other road issues that may arise. You can’t go super fast in a golf cart, but still, make sure to slow down over any dips or other unexpected road conditions.
Someone got thrown from a speeding golf cart and passed from their injuries just before they arrived, so please take it seriously.
Best Time to Visit Secret Beach
The best time to visit Secret Beach Ambergris Caye is early if you want to secure a table or a lounge chair.
We showed up around early afternoon, but it wasn’t super busy island-wide when we went, so don’t go based on our experience during peak season.
Even though it wasn’t crowded when we went, we still had a bit of trouble securing a good place to sit and eat, so crowded or not, go early for the pick of the litter.
Dry Season vs. Rainy Season
Belize’s dry season runs roughly from December through May, with sunny days and calmer seas, while the rainy season runs from June through November, with afternoon showers becoming more frequent and persistent later in the season.
Ambergris Caye specifically tends to stay relatively dry even in early summer (June–August) compared to the mainland, but September and October are the wettest months islandwide and also peak hurricane season.
We did our Belize itinerary in early December and experienced some short showers, but nothing that impeded our trip.
Weekday vs. Weekend Visits
Weekends at Secret Beach are reportedly busier, so a weekday visit gives you a better shot at snagging a table or lounge chair without arriving at the crack of dawn.
Even on a weekday, though, expect to arrive early, since it can get crowded outside peak season.
Morning vs. Afternoon Experience
Morning arrivals get first pick of seating and tend to beat the crowds.
We showed up in the early afternoon and had trouble finding a good spot, even though the island wasn’t especially busy that day.
If securing a specific beach bar or lounge area matters to you, morning is the safer bet.
Sunset Considerations
Leave well before dusk.
Street lighting is minimal along the route back, so driving a golf cart after dark means navigating with poor visibility.
Mosquitoes also tend to be more active closer to sunset, so leaving earlier helps you avoid both the bugs and the dark drive home.
What is Secret Beach Ambergris Caye Really Like?
From what I had read online and heard from fellow travelers, it seemed like a chill place to hang out, grab a drink, listen to some tunes, and relax. It is, some of that.
It’s also very much populated by touristy bars and restaurants looking to get you to take a seat and order some drinks and food. People from these establishments will try to get you to take a seat the minute you are in their vicinity.
There are also salespeople selling all sorts of things, from souvenirs such as bracelets to services like hair braiding.
Which can be rather bothersome for some people. I don’t love the hustle in this format, but I understand it.

Blue Bayou Beach Bar
We walked the length of Secret Beach as I was hunting for the Blue Bayou. We were told it has the ‘local’s prices.’ I don’t know if this is true; a sign there said so could be a marketing tactic, but we took our chances. They were also a lot less hustle-y than the others.
It’s kind of hidden at the end of Secret Beach, so if you have trouble finding it, head south. You’ll know you’ve found it when you find the picnic tables submerged in the water.
Apparently, the bartenders will come out to you, but no one was sitting out there when we were there, so I can’t confirm this. We instead ordered at the bar, and there were bees all over it! I’m not allergic, but even I was put off by this.
We had a drink here and lunch, away from the bees, but we weren’t overly impressed. While the idea of chilling is fun, I found it kind of lacking in overall vibe. But more importantly, the water wasn’t clear at all, especially in comparison to the turquoise waters outside of X’tan Ha.
I did mention this to a fellow traveler, and he said when we went, it was clear, so maybe we got a bad day, but either way, it wasn’t doing it for us.
Activities In and By the Water
The nice thing about Secret Beach is that there are several activities to do, for a fee, of course. My cousin had expressed an interest in snorkeling; that was until we saw how cloudy the water was, and we were told there would be a lady renting snorkel gear.
We were possibly too early cause she wasn’t there, but I guess it’s usually available.
If you’re looking for an easy place to swim, Secret Beach is pretty good, as you can wade out pretty far at about waist-high. There are also no rough waves or rocks that we came upon.
Depending on what beach bar you pick, they each have something different they feature, such as a volleyball net, basketball hoop, hammocks, and swings, all in the water. There are also water sports rentals.
Essential Ambergris Caye Beach Tips
As Secret Beach is quite a ways from main San Pedro, you’ll need to bring whatever you’d like to have for the day with you. To get the best experience, here are also some other helpful tips.
What to Bring
- Sunglasses – Take a pair of sunglasses with you, as it can get quite sunny!
- Hat – Wearing a hat is a great idea, especially if you plan to be at the beach for an extended period.
- Swimwear – A clear must-have, but something you wouldn’t want to go without!
- Biodegradable sunscreen – Because Belize’s coral reef is so important to them, they do a lot to protect it, which I really admire. One of their requests is that visitors wear biodegradable sunscreen to help protect it since it’s less pollutant to the water.
- Bug spray/Mosquito repellent bracelets – Bug spray seemed to do very little for me on this trip. But these bracelets seemed to work a bit better!
How Long to Spend
Back to why we only rented for 4 hours. I initially thought of renting for an 8-hour span as that was the next level up, but as we only spent about 2 hours at the beach, 4 hours was an ideal rental time period.
If you’re really into having a few drinks and snoozing or partying on the sand, spend some more time, but we weren’t impressed by the beach, so we left quickly after lunch.
Cell Phone Coverage and Wi-Fi Availability
I had to catch up on some work things while there and easily joined Blue Bayou’s wifi and connected with no issues. Would I highly recommend doing a lot of work here? No. But it’s nice to have in a pinch.
How Much Does a Visit to Secret Beach Cost?
Golf Cart Rental
A 4-seater golf cart runs about $50 USD for a 4-hour rental, which is what we paid.
Full-day rentals (8+ hours) tend to offer better value per hour, generally running $35–70 USD depending on the company and season.
There’s also a small bridge toll to cross from San Pedro to Secret Beach, roughly $10 USD round trip, worth budgeting for separately from the cart rental. We didn’t have to pay for it since we were coming from the resort north of the beach.
Food and Drinks
Pricing varies a lot depending on which beach bar you choose.
Some spots advertise “local prices” and more affordable food and drinks, while others run noticeably higher.
Expect a casual meal to run somewhere in the $10–30 USD range per person, with drinks priced separately and varying by bar.
Water Sports Rentals
Kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear are available to rent at various beach bars, but pricing isn’t standardized across the beach and varies by vendor.
I’d recommend asking directly at whichever bar you choose rather than expecting a fixed rate.
Typical Daily Budget
For a couple splitting a golf cart, plus food, drinks, and the bridge toll, expect to spend roughly $80–120 USD total for a half-day visit (closer to the 4-hour rental we did), or more if you extend the cart rental, add water sports, or visit during peak season when prices run higher.

- Water clarity varies and was notably murkier than the reef side during our visit
- Persistent vendors and sales pitches from bars, restaurants, and sellers as soon as you’re in view

Overall, Secret Beach wins on activities and being kid-friendly in the water, but the reef side wins decisively on clarity, snorkeling, and convenience, which is exactly why Secret Beach stayed a one-time visit rather than a repeat trip.
My Final Thoughts on this Secret Beach Belize Beach Review
Unless you are looking for a place to party and sunbathe while being served drinks, then I don’t think a trip to Secret Beach is worth it.
I could have easily chilled at my resort, by the bar, without the crowds and free kayaks and paddle boards, so it wasn’t an investment I feel was worth it.
The water on the reef (east) side of the island is also far clearer, in my experience, so I’d rather spend my time there than on the west side, which looked murky to me. I’ve seen some pictures of Secret Beach being clearer, so again, maybe we got an ‘off day,’ but either way, I prefer the reef side.
If you don’t have a nice resort or beach near where you’re staying, especially if you have kids (as the water is shallow and boasts activities), then maybe a trip over here is worth it. But generally, I’d recommend skipping Secret Beach Ambergris Caye.
