Where to Stay in Vienna, Austria: My Favorite Areas + Best Budget Hotels

Need to know where to stay in Vienna on a budget?

I recently took my mom on a surprise ancestry trip to Vienna, and since she offered to cover accommodations, I was determined to find the best budget-friendly options.

After searching for places to stay in Vienna, I ended up in some less likely spots than typical travel guides suggest because we wanted to save a few bucks!

While there aren’t really any bad areas to stay in Vienna, there are some tricks that’ll save you a few dollars in the long run, so you can drink more radler, eat more schnitzel, and spend less on hotels in Vienna.

Best Areas in Vienna: Quick Guide

What to Consider Before Booking Your Vienna Hotel

Location & Public Transport

During the trip, my mother and I used the hop-on hop-off bus included with the Vienna Pass as our main transportation, since it stops at all the major attractions anyway.

We only used public transportation a couple of times, and found it very simple to use.

Download the Maps.me app ahead of time to use its offline maps, as they’ll give you public transport info even if you don’t have data abroad. Alternatively, Citymapper can provide live info on public transportation options, but you’ll need data or wi-fi to access it.

As I was trying to limit my data usage on this trip, we used Maps.me primarily to get around on the Metro (U-Bahn).

Whether you choose to use Vienna’s public transport network, which includes the U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (regional trains), trams, and buses, OR the hop-on hop-off bus, you should figure out which option is close to your hotel so that you can factor in travel time.

While accommodations are cheaper on the outskirts of Vienna, if it takes an hour to get to the top attractions in Vienna, then it’ll dig into your vacation time.

Budget Expectations & Peak Season

The best time to visit Vienna to save some money is during the shoulder season.

The shoulder seasons in Vienna are April–May and September–October.

During these times, you can explore the sights without large crowds, so you won’t have to spend your day waiting in line for attractions or struggling to view art and antiquities among throngs of people.

As for where to stay in Vienna, this is when you’ll be able to snag a better hotel deal since there aren’t many tourists driving up the prices.

Prices can also vary by district and with events and festivals, such as the opera season or the Christmas markets. While they are lovely to explore, expect to pay premium prices during the holiday season because of the popularity.

Noise Level

Even though one of my hotels was next to a club, I didn’t even hear a sound!

While I can’t guarantee this for every place in Vienna, I didn’t find the city to be very loud at all, considering its size.

Parking Considerations

If you’re arriving by car from a trip across Austria or other nearby countries, make sure to select an accommodation that offers parking.

On a previous trip, I drove through Southern Germany and Austria.

We found that about half the hotels charged for parking, while the other half offered a free lot. So make sure to inquire before booking!

Language Barrier

In most areas of Vienna, you won’t have any trouble finding someone who speaks English.

However, if you’re looking to save a buck like me, staying on the outskirts of Vienna will help, but there’s a slight chance that less English will be spoken.

Use Google Translate (download German ahead of time for offline access) to read menus and assist with chatting with locals. We didn’t have any trouble, but it’s best to be prepared.

My Experience Staying in Vienna

On this trip, we started in Vienna after landing from the United States, returned to the city, and then departed home after touring other countries and cities.

Because of this loop around, I was able to experience staying at two different hotels in two different areas of Vienna.

Both felt very safe, quiet, and were comfy!

Garner Hotel Vienna

The first hotel we stayed at in Vienna was the Garner Hotel Vienna.

Essentially, it is across the street from the Vienna Central Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof), which made it super convenient to hop on the train over to Salzburg, as that was our next stop.

Although it wasn’t very close to any of the main attractions, there is a U-Bahn (subway) stop nearby, and catching the hop-on hop-off bus from there was relatively easy.

The room was clean, comfortable, quiet, and affordable.

We opted to include breakfast because it made it easy to eat there and then explore in the mornings, rather than searching for something to eat.

I do have to give a shoutout to the staff here. Our luggage got lost for the first few days of our trip, and I wasn’t able to get through on the help line in English.

However, I was able to get through on the German line. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn enough with Mango Languages to converse, so the receptionist was able to help me out and explain the problem. With her help, we got our luggage within the hour!

Hotel George Vienna

On our return to Vienna, we stayed at the Hotel George Vienna, which was located close enough to Schönbrunn Palace that we were able to walk there.

I liked Hotel George a bit more than the Garner Hotel, but that was mostly because its aesthetics were a bit more modern.

You can opt to add breakfast at this hotel, as we did.

Pro Tip: Vienna is compact and has excellent public transport. Even “far” districts like Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus are only 20-30 minutes from the center by metro. Don’t be afraid to stay outside Innere Stadt if you want better value!

Innere Stadt (1st District) – Best Area for First-Time Visitors

Why Stay in Innere Stadt—Innere Stadt is the heart of Vienna, making it perfect for first-time or short-stay visitors. You’ll be steps from major sights like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg Palace, and the Sisi Museum, the Vienna State Opera, and the Spanish Riding School.

The area is also a transport hub, with U1 and U3 metro lines meeting at Stephansplatz for fast citywide access.
