But discovering a historic property where Swiss artist Rudolf Koller once lived, filled with iconic paintings of Zürich by Heinz Blum, complete with thoughtful touches like complimentary hazelnut spread and chocolate Easter bunnies, plus having access to arguably the city’s most famous Swiss restaurant literally downstairs, completely changed my perspective.

When planning a trip to Switzerland’s largest city, finding the perfect accommodation in Zürich Old Town (Altstadt) can significantly improve your experience, as you’ll be that much closer to the action.
Niederdorf, part of the Old Town, is popularly known for its medieval streets and squares, cathedrals like Grossmünster, and historic streets such as Limmatquai, which have epic views of Lake Zürich.
Among the many options available in this prime spot of real estate, Hotel Adler Zürich consistently stands out as a top contender for travelers seeking authentic Swiss hospitality.

The Perfect Base for Exploring Switzerland
The Hotel Adler Zürich also boasts excellent public transport connections!
Zürich’s central train station, Zürich Hauptbahnhof, is a mere .4 miles away (an easy 8-minute walk). I headed to this station to visit the gorgeous Abbey Library of St Gall, one of the oldest libraries in the world, which is located about an hour from Zürich.
There’s also a tram stop that’s even closer!
When I departed for Prague, I took tram 4 from the Rudolf-Brun-Brücke stop, just .1 mile away (a 2-minute walk), which took me directly to the Bahnhof Altstetten Nord, where I was able to catch a train to Basel.
Swiss Comfort Meets Modern Convenience
As a boutique hotel with Swiss roots, located in a historic building where the famous Swiss artist Rudolf Koller once lived, today, Hotel Adler Zürich boasts iconic paintings of Zürich’s famous locations by Heinz Blum, making the hotel feel like a living gallery.
As a history nerd who’s visited quite a few famous art museums, it was truly a treat to stay in an accommodation that reflected this.
But don’t let the idea of a museum give you the wrong impression. There’s plenty of warmth in the 52 individually designed rooms. Hotel Adler Zürich perfectly balances traditional Swiss character with contemporary comfort.
Each room offers:
- Custom-made wooden furniture reflecting Swiss craftsmanship
- Hand-painted wall murals depicting Zürich Old Town scenes
- Modern amenities including complimentary high-speed WiFi
- Soundproofed windows (essential for an Old Town location)
- Air conditioning (which is not always available in historic Zürich hotels)
- Renovated bathrooms with rainfall showers
- Impeccable cleanliness and thoughtful amenities, such as slippers and a reading light
The rooms range from cozy single rooms perfect for solo travelers like myself or those visiting with a travel companion to spacious family rooms that can accommodate up to four guests.
My Experience Staying at this Zürich Old Town Hotel
As I was transferring from one hotel in Zürich to another, I dropped my luggage off at Hotel Adler Zürich before departing for the Abbey Library of St Gall.
Getting there from across the Limmat River was a picturesque walk filled with quaint streets, adorable shops, and tasty-looking restaurants.
After returning from St. Gall, I checked in at the desk (which is open 24 hours) and was given some lovely gifts! A package of a hazelnut spread (like Nutella) for booking directly, a chocolate Easter bunny (it was just before the holiday), and an iridescent candle for creating content.
Unfortunately, I was only able to dig into one jar of the spread and had to leave the candle behind as I’m currently a carry-on only girlie, but I devoured the bunny!
First impressions of the room: Spacious, clean, and comfortable! I even had a view over a courtyard where a market and a restaurant were set up.
I really loved the booklet they provide visitors that tells the history of Hotel Adler, provides hotel information, lists their restaurant’s world-famous classics, and offers local information on museums, nightlife, and more—all super helpful for first-time visitors!
They even had a 50% off discount for some sites!
There were even some thoughtful touches, such as additional pillows and reading lights on either side of the bed.
After exploring my room, I ventured throughout the hotel and checked out the artwork by Swiss artist Rudolf Koller. You can find a bit of his work in various spots within the hotel.
They also have an adorable section that reminded me of a Parisian street that’s perfect for photos!
Downstairs, you’ll find an area to relax and grab a drink, such as water or soda, for free. I always get dehydrated on a trip, so this was an excellent bonus.
A Culinary Experience at the Swiss Chuchi Restaurant
One of Hotel Adler Zürich’s most distinctive features is its ground-floor restaurant, Swiss Chuchi, the first fondue parlour in the Old Town and arguably the most famous restaurant for Swiss specialities in Zürich.
When I collaborated with them, they offered to make a reservation for me, and I’m sure glad they did, as otherwise I would have been waiting in the line I saw throughout the evening!
Travel Tip: Book your table in advance online or by phone for Swiss Chuchi!
At my reservation time, I was led from the front desk into the restaurant and to a table by the window. I was greeted warmly by the staff and sat amongst the restaurant’s rustic decor, featuring wooden tables and Swiss decorative elements, such as cuckoo clocks.
I ordered the Capuns gratin and a creamy cheese sauce for an appetizer.
Capuns are traditional dumplings from the canton of Grisons, Switzerland. Spaetzli dough is wrapped in chard leaves before being cooked and served in a traditional sauce.
My entree was, of course, fondue! I got Adler’s special cheese fondue, which is made with aged cheeses, white wine, cherry liquor, and garlic. My lovely waiter suggested steamed potatoes, steamed veggies, and bread to go with it. There are also tons of various flavor variations!
This was delicious, but it was certainly enough for two people! Though I decided to push it and order dessert as the Iced Toblerone parfait trio called to me!
I paired all of this with two glasses of Riesling and had a very filling and decadent dinner.
There are also other dishes available such as raclette, Alp-herder’s macaroni, and Zürich ragout with rosti, all of which the restaurant is notable for.
Having an authentic Swiss dining experience literally at your doorstep is a significant advantage for visitors wanting to sample local cuisine. It’s also one of the reasons I believe Hotel Adler is one of the best hotels in Zürich Old Town.
Is This Boutique Hotel Worth the Price?
As a budget traveler, I wasn’t super thrilled that Zürich ranks among Europe’s most expensive cities. But I knew that going into this, and understood that accommodation costs reflect this reality.
However, when considering Hotel Adler Zürich’s value proposition compared to other hotels in Zürich Old Town, several factors come into play:
- Location: The unbeatable central location justifies a higher rate than properties in outlying districts, which may cause travelers to spend more on transportation or take up travel time.
- Included amenities: Complimentary breakfast featuring Swiss specialties and international options, and free WiFi add significant value. While I was departing early and unable to get the full breakfast experience, I still really enjoyed the packed breakfast I got before leaving.
- Cultural immersion: The authentic Swiss environment provided is worth the investment for travelers wanting to get the most immersive experience possible.
- Dining convenience: Having one of Zürich’s most famous Swiss restaurants on-site is super convenient, especially when they assist you in booking in advance.
While budget travelers might find more economical options outside the city center, those prioritizing location, authenticity, and convenience will find that Hotel Adler Zürich offers great value.

The only issue I experienced while staying here was a bit of noise when I went to sleep. I was departing early to get a flight from Basel to Prague, so I went to bed early as well. I heard some noise from what seemed to be the restaurant, as I was just one floor above it.
While this didn’t prevent me from sleeping well, I mention it for those who may be light sleepers and wish to request a room higher up, which likely would have less noise.
For visitors prioritizing location, local character, and culinary excellence, Hotel Adler Zürich absolutely deserves consideration as one of the best hotels in Zürich Old Town.
