Searching for a unique and affordable accommodation in Stratford-upon-Avon?
The biggest frustration? Finding accommodation close to the main attractions that didn’t cost an arm and a leg, especially when most budget options feel like afterthoughts in a town designed around Shakespearean tourism.
Having stayed at 15+ hostels across Europe and North America and always being skeptical of places that sound too good to be true, I can tell you that my night at YHA Stratford-upon-Avon genuinely gave me what I can only describe as a “Downton Abbey moment.”
Walking into Hemmingford House, a magnificent Georgian mansion built in 1784 on acres of manicured grounds, left me completely dumbstruck by its elegance and grandeur.
Whether you’re a Shakespeare enthusiast planning a literary pilgrimage, a solo traveler, or a budget-conscious traveler wanting to experience the English countryside without bougie hotel prices, you’ll adore YHA Stratford-upon-Avon.
In this review, I’ll share what to expect from the rooms and facilities, why the location is perfect for exploring Shakespeare’s town, and whether I felt safe as a solo female traveler.
Is YHA Stratford-upon-Avon Worth Staying At?
YHA Stratford-upon-Avon is ideal for budget travelers, Shakespeare fans, and solo travelers seeking a unique setting—a converted 1784 Georgian mansion on 3.5 acres, about 2 miles from the town center. Based on my stay, the private en-suite room was spotless and comfortable, though it’s roughly a 40-minute walk from Stratford’s main attractions (bus and taxi are available). Breakfast and towels aren’t included, but as the only hostel in Stratford-upon-Avon, it’s the clear budget pick.

What Attractions Are Near YHA Stratford-upon-Avon?
2+ miles isn’t exactly next door; however, most accommodations in town, I found, are costly.
This is also the ONLY hostel in Stratford-upon-Avon, so you won’t find a better deal.
And as I mentioned in the section below on getting to this YHA hostel, public transportation is pretty affordable, making the short trek truly worth it.

Getting to YHA Stratford-upon-Avon
After finishing the Stratford Town Walk and visiting Shakespeare’s Birthplace in June of 2015, I walked back to my YHA Stratford-upon-Avon hostel.
I won’t lie; it was a bit of a walk, but after the amount of food and alcohol I had ingested at my friend’s wedding, I needed the exercise, since the trip to Avebury and Stonehenge just a day before hadn’t been much of a workout.
Memorably, I passed by the Gower Memorial.
There really should be a drinking game in this town.
Every time you see Shakespeare, you take a swig.
“In 1769, Garrick’s Stratford Jubilee Festival in honor of William Shakespeare started a growing public appreciation of the Bard in Stratford-upon-Avon, an appreciation which is reflected in the grandeur of this memorial statue. Given to the town in 1888, it is the work of Lord Ronald Gower who spent ten years sculpting it and funded much of the work from his personal fortune.”

The YHA hostel in Stratford-upon-Avon is about a 2-mile walk from town, so that took me 40-odd minutes.
However, if you do not need the exercise, especially after doing the guided Stratford-upon-Avon walking tour, then you can get to the hostel via:
- Taxi: Best to call ahead as I didn’t see a ton driving around
- Ride-share: Uber is available in Stratford-upon-Avon
- Bus: There are a few different bus lines (15 is the fastest) that’ll get you there (use Citymapper—one of my favorite apps for Europe—to plan your route with live transport info)
Hemmingford House Transformed into a YHA
Arriving at YHA Stratford upon Avon, I had what I can only describe as a Downton Abbey moment.
I was literally dumbstruck by this enchanting place, and the photos don’t do it justice.
It was like I was able to stay in the Crawley family abode.
This Stratford upon Avon hostel was once a mansion. And the elegant building has its own name, Hemmingford House.
Hemmingford House was built in 1784 and became the home of YHA in 1947. It was a private residence until WWII when the British Iron and Steel Corporation commandeered it.
YHA bought the property and turned it into the lovely hostel it is today.
An extension was added in 1975 to add a new dining room and extra bedrooms.
The estate is on a 3.5-acre site, which includes stables and coach houses.
My Private En-Suite Room
YHA Stratford upon Avon has 134 beds across 32 bedrooms, 16 of which are en suite, available to book.
You can book a bed in a shared room or private room (like I had), or even a cabin or tent for camping!
I felt like I was walking through time as I made my way to my room, as the halls were just stunning.
I decided to stay in my room for the night, exhausted from my big day in this medieval market town and with a long travel day ahead to Rome.
That bed was the best thing in the world to me that night.
It was so comfy and just what the doctor ordered after my long day of walking around Stratford.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the hot shower that was in my room, so I didn’t have to share.
Was it bare bones? Yes, but that’s why I pack properly for hostels!
The entire room was spotless, immaculate even.
My room overlooked St. James’ Church and part of the estate.
I couldn’t have asked for a better room or view here.

Who Is This Hostel Best For (And Not)
YHA Stratford-upon-Avon is best for budget travelers who want something more memorable than a standard hostel—a converted Georgian mansion on 3.5 acres is a genuinely unique setting for the price.
It’s also a strong fit for Shakespeare pilgrims, solo travelers (the midnight lockup and calm, low-key atmosphere make it feel secure), and travelers of any age, since YHA hostels welcome all ages despite the name.
It’s less ideal if you want to be within easy walking distance of Stratford’s main attractions. At 2 miles and roughly a 40-minute walk, you’ll want to budget for a bus or taxi rather than walking back and forth.
It’s also not the right fit if you want breakfast or towels included, since both cost extra here.
Is YHA Stratford-upon-Avon Worth Staying At? My Honest Review
Everything was in perfect working order at this Stratford-upon-Avon hostel on my visit to England.
The only comment I have is that when I tried to use the payphone early the next morning to get a taxi, for some reason, I could hear who I was calling, but they couldn’t hear me.
I ended up using my cell phone to book the taxi to the train station, but otherwise I have no negative comments to report.
However, towels are not included; they are available for hire. I find they take up too much space to pack, so I typically pay the small fee.
Breakfast is also not included.
Compared to other YHA hostels I’ve stayed at, it’s less party-centric, unlike YHA London Central. YHA Oxford Street, which is now owned by Astor, was just as family-friendly.
Overall, all were clean and safe.
I would highly recommend the YHA Stratford-upon-Avon hostel, giving it 4.7/5 stars ⭐, as the setting alone makes it worth staying at, and the room and service backed that up.
It is one of the best places to stay in Stratford-upon-Avon for those on a budget.
My only wish is that I could have stayed longer than one night to really spend some time on the grounds!

The United Kingdom ranked 30th globally on the Global Peace Index 2025, and Stratford-upon-Avon—a small market town built around literary tourism—is considerably quieter and lower-risk than major UK cities like London or Edinburgh.
The town is compact and walkable, and the streets were well-lit and calm during my June 2015 evening visit.
Everyone I encountered was warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere had an old-world feel and charm.
Solo female travelers will find Stratford easy to navigate. I walked back to the hostel in the early evening without any concerns.
As for the hostel itself, YHA Stratford-upon-Avon locks its doors at midnight, meaning no one without a keycard can enter after hours.
Can older people stay at YHA?
Almost anyone can stay at a YHA (Youth Hostel Association) hostel; despite the name, there is no upper age limit.
YHA England and Wales was founded in 1930 to give young working-class people access to the countryside, but it now welcomes travelers of all ages: families, couples, solo adventurers, school groups, and older adults alike.
Private en-suite rooms are available alongside shared dormitories, making it a comfortable option for travelers of all ages and travel styles.
